Nacido en Bielefeld, Alemania en 1961.
Estudió artes y literatura alemana en Bielefeld University. Estudió artes en HBK Braunschweig. Grado máster. Profesor invitado en Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt/Main. Profesor invitado en Dortmund Fachhochschule. Desde el 2003, profesor en Cine experiemtnal en la Academy of Media Arts, KHM, Colonia.
Matthias Müller es un artista que trabaja con cine, vídeo, instalación y fotografía. Como comisario, Müller ha organizado numerosos eventos de cine, tales como the Found Footage Film Festival (1996 y '99), el primer festival aleman de filmes autobiográficos, Ich, etc. (1998), y varios programas itinerantes. Con estos filmes y vídeos ha participado en importantes festivales de cone internacional en Cannes, Venecie, Berlin, Toronto, Locarno, Oberhausen, y Rotterdam. Su trabajo tambien ha sido incluido en varias exposiciones colectivas. En 1994, El MOMA de Nueva York le dedicó una retrospectiva. Sus films y vídeos son parte de colecciones de instituciones internacionales como el Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Museu d’Art Contemporani, Barcelona, Nederlands Film Museum, Amsterdam, Australian Centre For The Moving Image, Melbourne, Kunsthalle Bielefeld, the Goetz Collection, Munich, the collection of Isabelle and Jean-Conrad Lemaître, Londres y Tate Modern, Londres.
